We all know that it can be very difficult to fit exercise around a busy schedule especially when you have children!
Here are seven handy tips that can make training with children a bit easier:
1. It is important to make sure that having the time to exercise is one of your priorities. If it is one of your priorities you will make sure that you fit it into your schedule. Remember that in order to be there for your kids it is in their interest to keep yourself fit and healthy. Seeing you exercising will also encourage them and help them to see it as something normal to do regularly not just on the odd occasion. Regular training will also help your energy levels and mean you are able to kick that football around the park with them, take them swimming or chase them round the garden.
2. Fit exercise into small chunks of time. Park slightly further away from your destination to increase your walking time. Take the stairs instead of the lift. Walk instead of driving short journeys. Do squats or lunges while cleaning your teeth and waiting for the kettle to boil. Research has shown that just as much benefit can be gained from several short periods of exercise compared to one longer period.
3. Exercise as a family. There are lots of ways to exercise as a family. You can go for a walk or cycle ride, play tennis, do yoga together or go for a run. As well as the health benefits you will be enjoying quality time with your family.
4. Get a personal trainer at home. Recruit a personal trainer to attend your home to workout with you on your lunch break or any other time to suit you. There is no need to organise childcare or pet care and you can fit it in between work, school runs and other activities.
5. Take your children to the playground and workout while they play. Take a brisk walk/run around the perimeter of the playground or do some bodyweight exercises. You could buddy up with a friend or too if you are feeling self-conscious. This will also stop you getting cold when the kids want to go on the playground on those cold winter afternoons!
7. Choose your exercise wisely. Some exercise can be more beneficial than others and different training forms have different benefits. Kettlebells are a really good way of combining strength and cardio and working lots of different muscles at the same time. Always gain advice from a fitness professional before using for the first time.
