With the current worldwide pandemic the increase of people working from home has increased exponentially! So it is even more important to understand the best ways to stay healthy when working from the comfort of your home!

Here are eight handy tips to ensure that your health is remaining in optimal condition when working from home:

1. Create a separate work space. If space in your home allows ensure you have a separate work area from your living area. If not then make sure when you are not working that your work equipment is hidden away out of sight to help you relax and forget about work.
2. Keep moving as much as possible. Being sedentary is not good for our health. Try and walk around when you are on the phone. Use the bathroom on another floor to where you work if possible to get you climbing the stairs more. Ensure you move away from your workstation at least once an hour even if it is just for a quick stretch.
3. If you use a screen it is important to give your eyes a regular rest. Aim to follow the 20/20/20 rule. This means that every 20 minutes, you look 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Set yourself reminders on your phone or computer so you do not forget.
4. Put house plants around your work area. House plants help purify the air and reduce indoor air pollution. They oxygenate the air and result in numerous health benefits, including reducing fatigue and headaches. Having house plants around your home can improve your mood and reduce stress. House plants recommended by the RHS as being attractive, relatively inexpensive and low maintenance include bamboo palm, Chinese evergreen, dragon plant, peace lily and spider plant.
5. Schedule a workout into your daily routine. This could be in your home, garden or local gym. Exercise will boost your endorphins and improve your mood as well as helping to keep your body fit and healthy. It will also help your concentration so that you are more productive once you return to work.
6. Prepare your meals and snacks from scratch and plan what you are going to eat in advance so that you don't end up bingeing on junk food. Healthy meals and snacks can be simple such as a quick tuna salad, jacket potatoes, veggie sticks with hummus or plain, unsalted nuts. Try to drink plenty of water and avoid sugary drinks.
7. Try and get outside every day for at least 20 minutes. This will boost your mood, top up your vitamin D levels and provide a restorative effect for the mind.
8. Plan your day so that you keep focused and know what you want to achieve each day. If you feel your concentration flagging, take a quick break, move around, check what your goals are and then start again.
